New Nash Talent: Worthy Women
We love supporting local, and we think that you should too. We have a brand new segment to introduce to you that we are very excited about! Our 'New Nash Talent,' will be a monthly post featuring some of our recently discovered hot talent around the town.
To kick this off, we are sticking to our female roots. We love supporting other women as much as we love supporting local businesses, so this post features all strong, powerful women! We compiled a list of 6 of our favorite artists--a mix of artists with very different mediums. We had the chance to talk to each of these #girlbosses, and ask them a few questions of their journeys as artists.
We met Taila at the ‘Blarney Blowout’--a house show just last month! We originally went to check out a local band ‘Parrotfish’--peep the boys in the pic. There was a great lineup and Talia was one of our favorite artists that performed. She is so down to Earth, her outfits are ALWAYS on point, and don’t get us started on her ~voluminous~ hair!
Talia is inspired by anything and everything: life, love, death, and heartbreak, as well as history and literature. She is able to pull “all forms of art and creation,” into her sound. With her vocal jazz roots, Talia describes her music as a mixture of jazz, blues, rock and roll, R&B, reggae all with a Latin flair.
As a young artist, Talia has run into her fair share of obstacles, but passion has always outweighed the struggles. Talia’s new single Throw It My Way reflects the moments when an artist runs into these roadblocks. In her experience, “every ‘no’ is an opportunity for growth.” Through her ups and downs, Talia has realized that “oftentimes, it’s only when I’m told I can’t do something that I realize I can.”
A piece of advice from Talia to aspiring artists is: "Know what you want and know how to get it without having to compromise your values or sense of self."
Fun fact about Talia: She jams out to 'Phone Calls' by Jessie Reyez
Ava from Aviate Press screams #girlpower. We stumbled across Aviate Press at Project 615’s Nashvember (a fun event that you should check out!), we absolutely adore her funky, yet simplistic designs. Ava creates greeting cards, prints, notebooks, pins, and everything in between! Nic was instantly drawn to Ava’s creations because of her Frida Kahlo prints--aka one of Nic’s role models as a little girl due to their matching unibrows.
Ava describes her art as “commercial and playful,” and she produces her art for millennials, specifically through art that empowers women, or art that simply gives a good laugh. She gets her inspiration from Frida Kahlo (woot woot!!), and Maira Kalman, as well as pop-culture references and hot viral content.
Ava has owned and operates Aviate Press for nearly 3 years, though she has just recently begun doing it full-time! Proving that you don’t have to study the career you enter into, she had no formal training and did not learn the ins and outs of contracts, licensing, and other ways artists can make a living. Through her art, Ava has grown less fearful of the unknown, become more accountable in her entrepreneurship, and proved to herself that she is capable of so much more.
A piece of advice from Ava to aspiring artists is to: “Work on your craft every day, even if it’s just for 5 minutes.”
Fun fact about Ava: her favorite singer to jam out to is the one and only, Queen B.
Ash first came across Audrey on @gooddyeyoung, a healthy and beauty page that Audrey modeled for. Ash was amazed by the boldness of her hair color began following her. When Ash found out that Audrey also produced music, she soon turned to Spotify to listen to her EP, Lost in Love. Audrey’s songs can be described as upbeat pop, but don’t be fooled, each of her songs has a special meaning and a story behind every lyric. With her inspiration coming from Whitney Houston, she loves writing songs with beautiful stories and cool beats.
A piece of advice form Audrey to aspiring artists is to: "Focus on your image and sound, and stick with it."
Fun fact about Audrey: If she could travel anywhere in the world right now, it would be Paris, because she "would just love to sit at a little café drinking coffee and enjoy the culture--and of course meet cute French boys."
We found Rebekah and her unique art through one of Ash’s friends who ordered the piece pictured below! She hand paints elaborate Bible covers, whether that be with beautifully scripted Bible verses or majestic landscapes of creation. Rebekah describes her art as realistic, but whimsical. She uses bold colors, and lots of flowers to keep it light and airy; her aim is to create something “that you want to feel or be in, like a perfect sunset of a night sky.” Rebekah grabs her inspiration from anything she sees, specifically the views and color combinations she takes in while exploring nature.
As any artists, Rebekah has run into obstacles in producing her art. Being “unique and original,” in her art has been her main struggle. Rebekah is still trying to figure out what becoming her own artist means, in terms of creating, branding, and selling her art.
A piece of advice from Rebekah to aspiring artists is to: “Step outside of the box and try to see things in a different light”
Fun fact about Rebekah: her all-time favorite movie is ‘Remember the Titans’!
Charissa is a girl that will grab your attention when she walks into the room. She has a such a unique style that you couldn’t find her clothes in just any department store. We first came across Charissa at the university that we all attend, we were always noticing her ~eccentric~ clothes, bright colored lipstick, and platform shoes walking to class. She has such a distinctive voice that will surely be heard around the world someday.
Charissa gives herself plenty of space to create and does not box herself into a specific sound. Her main concern for her music is that she is always “honest and vulnerable and not… manufacture[d] to try and be something” other than herself. When writing she challenges herself to write more about the world around her and meaningful stories from other people’s perspectives. With her inspiration coming at any time of day she is always prepared to start writing.
Charissa has been surrounded by music all her life. Charissa has moved from country music to moody pop and is now finding music for herself, rather than sticking to her roots. She is finding her own definition of her music and her sound, which is always changing.
A piece of advice from Charissa to aspiring artists is: Be willing to receive constructive criticism and be humble enough to realize that other people know more than you, there is always something to learn from someone.
Fun fact about Charissa: If she could have one superpower it would be reading people’s minds.
Nic found Caitlin, while browsing through the Instagram explore page. Nic was finally able to meet up with Caitlin, and purchase a couple pieces at the semi-annual Porter Flea Market. And in case you were wondering, the name Cash Color comes from her name! (CA-tlin SH-irock). It’s “easy, memorable, catchy, and fun,” and matches perfectly with the art that she creates!
We love love love Caitlin’s collections, she has neutral, colorful, and “love everybody” collections. Her neutral and colorful collections revolve around the alphabet and are great to showcase names (which we find powerful amazing because names are so important to our identity and self-image!). Her “love everybody,” collection is simply stunning, and pushes body positivity among women of all shapes and sizes! Caitlin describes her style as “simplistic, clean, airy, [and] abstract.”
If Caitlin wasn’t an artist, she said that she would be an interior designer. She finds excitement simply by walking into a room and looking at different designs and decor. Caitlin finds her inspiration from these spaces, and makes her art specifically to add “personality, beauty, and meaning to a space.” Caitlin shared some of her struggles in becoming an artist with us, that aspiring artists may find troubling as well! She ran into difficulties like: putting a price tag on her art, learning to say no to custom work, to focus on creating her own lines, not comparing herself to other brands, and putting herself in the vulnerable position of selling her work, and being confident in her art! Caitlin went to the Fine Art and Design school, where she learned how to create, but “knew nothing about business.”
A piece of advice from Caitlin to aspiring entrepreneurs is to: “learn from the pros.” Caitlin gets her guidance from “Hey Sweet Pea,” who show her “how to build a business and create one that is true to you.”
Fun fact about Caitlin: Her go-to song to jam out to--is a song that was written just for her! It’s called ‘Falling’ by ScottyShy--and it’s a bop, talk about an artistic couple!!
Well...that's a wrap of 'New Nash Talent,' so make sure to check out our featured artists: follow them, give them a listen, or buy their art! Our curly headed cuties are so talented, and we want you to support our local ladies. #whorunstheworld
