Don't be a basic witch this Halloween

It’s spooky season. There are soooo many costume ideas to choose from that avoid the Halloween faux pas of blackface and other cultural appropriation tactics. You could go for the always fun (and predictable) cat costume, OR you can spice it up a little. This Halloween we decided to dress up as two of our favorite ladies, Frida Kahlo and Cardi B--two totally different women and calls to fame, but a fun combination for sure. Our costumes inspired us to come up with a list of cool women that you can easily dress up as!

Frida Kahlo: One of Mexico’s greatest artists, most notably famous for her inspirational self-portraits. This is one of Nic’s role models since she learned about her in elementary art class, and it was such a fun costume to put together. This costume is super simple, all you really need is a bright colored shawl, statement jewelry (big and bold necklaces and earrings), and of course a beautiful flower crown.

Cardi B: Okurrrrrr, one of the newest and most popular female rappers today, Ash had to honor this fabulous lady this year for Halloween. With so many notable outfits to choose from, we decided to go with her fun & funky ‘Finesse’ outfit. All that's needed is a varsity jacket, yellow crop top, a backwards hat, and of course big ol’ hoops. You are sure to make some money moves in this fit

Katy Perry: An ode to her California Girls music video, Nic’s roommate DIY’d this fun outfit for a Halloween party, and we absolutely loved it! Mak decked out this costume with a blue wig, colorful tutu, and of course candy across her chest!

Rosie the Riveter: A Halloween costume that is SO simple to put together, and yet this costume will always be a timeless classic. With a denim jacket and a red bandana this costume is put together with a flex of the arm. Bonus points if you add in a bright red lipstick--our favorite is Fenty’s universal red.

Some other quick (but fierce) costume ideas for you:

  • Mia Hamm: A soccer icon, among the world’s best female soccer players. With a #9 jersey, athletic shorts, and long socks this costume can be put together in minutes. Add a couple scrunchies and a gold medal to complete the look.
  • Susan B. Anthony: The OG female, queen of the 19th century, and key leader in the women’s suffrage movement.. We should remember her any and every day, including Halloween. An old fashioned outfit is the way to go, dressed in a floor length black dress and a large white collar you can also be this woman that completely changed history. Rock a ‘Votes For Women’ sash and updo hairstyle to tie the costume together.
  • Serena Williams: Only THE greatest female athlete of our time. This outfit requires a cute tennis outfit and headband, feel free to where a matching tutu like Serena is known to do on the court. Grab a tennis racket and hold your head up high because this confident lady is always a winner.
  • Amelia Earhart: What a woman. So many said she couldn’t, but she persisted and became the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. All the recent news about her life has made us wanting to recreate her iconic piot dresswear. Despite the cultural norms, Amelia dressed in dark pants, a brown leather jacket, a white scarf, a bomber hat, and of course her pilot goggles. This is so easy to recreate, and such a cool, historic costume.
  • Miley Cyrus: We love all of Miley’s stages, from her young Hannah Montana days to her crazy party days, and everything in between. You really can’t go wrong with any of her outfits (VMA’s, Wrecking Ball, Party in the USA, etc…). Our favorite is just one of her iconic everyday wears. All you’ll need is a Bulls jersey, black baseball cap, and black heels. Miley also rocked gold necklaces and vibrant red lipstick with her fit.

So while all of these costumes may not be “sexy,” or “provocative,” there really is nothing better than showcasing women that are changing or have changed the norms for women. The best Halloween costumes are ones that don’t offend people, but inspire people (nothing against funny costumes, because we all need a little light humor in our lives). These women inspire us, and we hope they inspire you too.

Let us know below what you dressed up for this Halloween. And as always, wait and see what we’ll do next!
