Quarantine Spotlight: Kara Leigh Creates
The sun is shining with that beautiful springtime air and we are not mad about it! Endless walks around the neighborhood have gotten a bit tiresome, so we have really enjoyed finding new trails and hiking spots around our towns. Nashville is officially in Phase One of reopening and we hope that you all are still staying safe and healthy throughout this transition!
We want to keep on spreading that small business love, and we are so excited to introduce you to our next Quarantine Spotlight, Kara of Kara Leigh Creates. We met Kara at one of the countless craft fairs that we have been to. We were amazed by Kara’s unique storytelling artwork that is inspired by her own personal story. She is so amazing, and her authenticity is showcased through her art and business! Keep reading below to find out more about her watercolor illustrations.
Tell us about yourself:
“My name is Kara King, and I am from Murfreesboro, TN! I am the person who has way too many pictures of her cat on her phone, would 100% live in World Market if that were allowed, and my dream is to one day visit the site of the Tent in the Great British Bake Off, I can hear Paul telling me now that my bake is a little stodgy!”
Yes!!! We love this too much.
“When I am not creating for my Etsy shop, you can usually find me in the kitchen baking, hanging out with my family and friends, or watching reruns of the Amazing Race (Thanks, Amazon Prime!).”
Tell us about your business/art:
“I began my Etsy shop Kara Leigh Creates in 2018. In my shop, I make custom adoption and love story timeline portraits and other hand lettered goods, many that are also adoption related. I was inspired to open my Etsy shop because of my own adoption story. I was adopted from South Korea when I was 4 months old, so adoption has always had a special place in my heart.
I realized though that there are not a lot of adoption related goods or products for adoptive families to have and celebrate how their families were built. I love to create and have a passion for adoption, so these worlds collided beautifully for me to open my shop. I have since made more items that are not adoption related, but my heart for adoption will always be the foundation for my shop being born. I hope that whatever I make can help people remember their unique stories and truly celebrate them!”
What are your hopes in the future for your craft?
“I hope to just keep creating! I want to keep pushing myself to create from my heart and what inspires me. I hope to keep creating products that speak to people and their stories.”
How has this quarantine season affected your craft?
“Thankfully, I have been able to stay at home during this strange and unprecedented season which has given me more time than usual to work on my craft. This quarantine season has encouraged me to try new things and just create from my heart and for the fun of it.
I have always been a crafty and creative person, but when you turn your passion and love into a business, it can take away some of that joy because there is suddenly a dollar amount attached to it. However, this time of quarantine has given me a new found joy of creating and remembering why I began my business in the first place.”
What have you been doing to keep yourself busy during this quarantine season?
“I have been creating a lot more! Before being in quarantine, I bought an iPad, so my world has been opened to all things digital, creatively speaking! This extra time has given me the opportunity to become more familiar with creating illustrations on my iPad and make digital art prints for my shop. Some of my favorites are my “Foods of Tennessee” poster and South Korea map.”
How can we support you?
“One of my favorite things about creating my Etsy shop is connecting with so many amazing people. A way to support me is to simply follow my shop! I can be found on Etsy and Instagram, and you can check out my blog for more shop updates!”
Kara we are so amazed how you have been able to turn your own personal story into a business model. Your work is so whimsical and playful, but can tell an entire story through your beautiful images. Tennessee is so lucky to have you, and we hope that you keep creating more and more throughout this quarantine season.
If you love Kara’s work as much as we do, make sure to check her out online and follow her socials. Watercolors and hand lettering never looked so good! She can help you tell your own story, making for the perfect home decoration, gift, or keepsake. We can’t wait to share more businesses owners and artists with you soon, wait and see what we’ll do next!
